General product description in the ECODESIGN Assistant

In the first step the ECODESIGN Assistant asks for the general information about the product. Thereafter step by step information about the individual product life cycle phases are presented, starting with the raw material.

Open the link opens in new windowAssistant and enter the relevant data for the five life cycle phases. Based on this product data the Assistant identifies relevant properties and the critical environmental aspects of your product.

On this basis the Assistant suggests the best suited strategies from the ECODESIGN PILOT for product improvement. The direct link simplifies going through the respective checklists.

Following data sorted along the life cycle are relevant for the environmental analysis of a product and for the data entry into the Assistant:

  • Material: polystyrene (PS) 67 g and paper insert 6 g
  • Production: injection molding of PS (energy consumption = 20 MJ/kg) 20 MJ/kg * 0,067 kg * 3,6 = 4,824 kW
  • Transport: 20.000 km by ship and 500 km by truck (5t).
  • Use: 50 uses per year with a product lifetime of one year is assumed.
  • After use: the cover including the CD itself is deposed through the household waste.

Question: What does Life Cycle Thinking (LCT) mean?
Life Cycle Thinking (LCT) is a method focusing on the
extension of the lifespan of a product.
Life Cycle Thinking comprises the analysis of all
life phases of a product: from raw material production
manufacturing and distribution to use and disposal.
The main goal of Life Cycle Thinking is the presentation
of the end of life costs.
