Office chair

From environmental profile of products to concrete product improvement

Put yourself in the place of an office furniture producer. You want to know about the environmental effects of your products and have a consultant develop an environmental profile in form of a lifecycle analysis, energy value analysis and a material energy toxicity matrix. In an environmental profile the entire lifecycle of the product is presented. Now it is the question how to implement this new knowledge into the product design. Where are good possibilities for environmental improvement?

The results of the environmental profile are used for the environmental design of an office chair using the software tool ECODESIGN PILOT.

Product description

  • Backrest and seat are made out of polypropylene, polyurethane (PUR) foam and a textile cover
  • Armrest made out of steel and polypropylene (PP)
  • Exchangable wheels
  • Mechanism with many adjustment possibilities, mainly made out of steel
  • Five armed base made out of aluminium

Based on the environmental profile the environmental effects of the office chair along with its product lifecycle are examined.

Question: An environmental analysis can comprise the following:
an analysis of the environmental costs from use to disposal.
an accounting of all environmental impacts according to ISO 14040.
a systematic collection and evaluation of energy and material flows.
a method for economic environmental management.
Collection of environmental impact of products in different
categories for example global warming expressed in a CO2 equivalent
