ECODESIGN EEG PILOT

Supplying information to users and treatment facilities

WEEE-Directive <- Implementation, "HOW" <-

Affixing the mark

The symbol which indicates a separate collection of electrical and electronic equipment - the crossed-out wheeled bin - shall be affixed visibly, legibly and indelibly to prevent waste equipment from being disposed of together with household waste. As a rule, the mark is to be affixed on the device itself. If the device is too small to affix the symbol of separate collection directly, the mark may be printed on the packaging, on the instructions for use or on the warranty certificate.

Preparing information for treatment facilities

If repair and treatment facilities require information on the various components and materials contained in electro equipment and on the location of hazardous substances and preparations, such information must be supplied. Manufacturers must make this information available, be it in the form of manuals, or in electronic form (e.g. CD ROMs, online services).

Preparing information for users

Information on means of returning and collecting EEE waste can be made available either via a printed medium or on the Internet. Furthermore, users are to be encouraged to actively participate in the separate collection and returning of EEE waste. Manufacturers need to supply the following information, e.g. as part of the instructions for the device's use:

  • the spirit and purpose of a separate collection of electro waste and its reuse and recovery, and the negative aspects of its disposal as unsorted household waste
  • possible means of returning and collection
  • potential effects of hazardous substances on the environment and human health
  • the meaning of the crossed-out wheeled bin.
