Siemens Transportation Systems
Statement: Joachim Pargfrieder (Engineering, Life Cycle Assessment)
We take a balanced holistic approach to rail-based mobility - from mass transit to regional to main-line services for people and goods. We have positioned our product portfolio to meet the needs of transportation and logistics operators. They are the ones who make sure people and goods are transported safely and swiftly - be it across cities, within regions or over long distances. Reliability, safety, attractiveness and efficiency are our top priorities and benefit the operators and the environment.
The company
The location Vienna is with his over 150 year old history an important cornerstone in the railway business of the Siemens group. Today railway vehicles, local passenger trains and passenger carriages for the whole world are developed and manufactured. With modern engineering and manufacturing technologies, for example high-performance welding robots, Siemens produce vehicles from rust-free steel or in aluminium heavy-profile-construction. In the 14.000m2 large assembly hall vehicles are assembled on seven modules simultaneously. Since the year 2003 Siemens Transportation Systems is working intensive on the development of environmental-efficient vehicles and overall system solutions to protect the society and the environment. Siemens Transportation Systems admits itself to sustainability and introduces innovative technologies which minimize negative environmental impacts.
Green Mobility - The future needs the railways for a cleaner environment
The Products
An excellent example for implementing the environmental developments is the Oslo Metro. We are setting standards in environmental compatibility with the Oslo Metro. The trains are of lightweight construction and optimized in terms of energy and ecological aspects. Compared to the predecessor vehicles, the new Oslo Metro saves around 30% energy by means of, among other things, the regenerative brake system. Its lightweight design means less loading of the systems, components and tracks. This greatly reduces lifecycle expenditures. And the metro trains are still worth something at the end of their service life: almost 95% of the materials used in the trains can be recycled. With its outstanding overall ecobalance, the Oslo Metro really exemplifies our understanding of Green mobility: easy on the environment during production, operation and recycling. So far we have supplied 63 trains - each with a maximum capacity of 678 passengers.

Ecodesign comment
Through the energy and ecological optimized lightweight construction the Metro Oslo saves around 30% energy compared to the previous model. Furthermore each component of the metro train has a long lifetime, can be easily repaired and more than 90% of the used materials can be recycled.
This has been realized though applying the following strategies:
